Roy Pryer takes the helm of the standards development team

We recently welcomed Roy Pryer to the Standards New Zealand management team as Standards Development Manager, overseeing the project managers, coordinators and publishing team. Roy tells us a little about himself.

I’m originally from the UK, born and raised in Brighton & Hove, on the South Coast of England. My background is originally in health, where I worked clinically before moving into a learning and development and capability development role. I immigrated to NZ with my family in 2005 and now live in the Hutt Valley in the Wellington region.

I worked in health in NZ before moving to Waka Kotahi NZTA in a capability role supporting low carbon and sustainable transport solutions for nearly three years, before moving to Standards New Zealand and MBIE in October this year.

What’s your experience of standards?

My experience with standards is as a user, applying and meeting audit requirements based on standards. As well as using standards within health and seeing how they support transport and construction of horizontal infrastructure, I have been involved in the development and use of technical guidance and guidelines developed through a consensus process, similar to the way standards are developed.

I feel strongly about working in roles that contribute to society, that help improve and lift how we live, work, and relax. Standards do that across many fronts and help shape a better future for my kids as well as the whole of Aotearoa.

Tell us about your team and what they do

The team has is made up of people who are professional and passionate about supporting the development of standards that contribute to Aotearoa, for example driving economic growth, or improving safety, health, and accessibility.

They cover a range of expertise including project management, stakeholder management, graphic design, and editing and publishing. They are highly skilled and a great bunch of humans, and I’m happy to have joined the team.
