Safety barriers and fences around swimming pools, spas and hot tubs

The Building System Performance branch of MBIE has sponsored access to view and print a single downloadable PDF copy of this standard at no charge. Standards New Zealand also offers this standard to be purchased as Hard Copy or Online Library subscription.

Barriers like fences restrict unsupervised access to residential pools and help reduce young children drowning. Options for the location of effective safety barriers that will restrict the access of young children to swimming pools are provided, and requirements for the design, construction and performance of fences, gates, retaining walls and door sets intended to form a barrier to restrict access of young children to swimming pools are specified. To use these methods to verify compliance with the New Zealand Building Code for residential pool barriers, they must be read along with Acceptable Solution F9/AS1.
