Specification for reticulated natural gas
The purpose of this specific interim standard is to allow the blending of biomethane within the reticulated gas network. The final and fully revised version of this standard is expected to additionally allow blending of hydrogen gas within the gas distribution network.
This standard provides specification limits for gas characteristics and components consistent with safe operation of the existing appliance population. It provides certainty for appliance manufacturers when providing appliances for use in the New Zealand market and for installers when setting up those appliances.
By specifying limits for contaminants, it seeks to ensure the integrity of the transportation systems and prevent operating problems for most end users.
In this edition, the introduction of biomethane has been formalised, and the test methods and frequencies have been reviewed and updated. Because biomethane has been introduced, the limit for oxygen has been relaxed and, relatedly, the limit for water has been reduced in Table 2.
Some gas consumers may require tighter limits on some listed constituents, or limits on other unlisted constituents, to support specific end uses (for example, to avoid poisoning catalysts). These requirements should be met by additional processing by the gas consumers or be addressed in the contract with the gas supplier. Any such limits must be technically justifiable and supported by appropriate methods for demonstration of compliance. If of sufficient generality, they may be incorporated into this specification through the normal process for amendment of standards.
