NZS 5465:2001 Self containment of motor caravans and caravans(external link)

This standard specifies the requirements for water supply, sanitary plumbing and drainage installation and solid waste containment in motor caravans and caravans for the purpose of obtaining a self containment certificate. It includes two amendments:

  • an amendment from 2012 to reference the Freedom Camping Act 2011, and introduce an easily recognisable sticker identifying self-contained vehicles that meet the NZS 5465 Standard
  • an amendment in 2017 to strengthen the minimum requirements for a toilet within a motor caravan or caravan.

Clause 6.1 of this standard was amended by the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act 2023(external link). The amendment requires a motor caravan or caravan to have a toilet permanently-fixed to the vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. This standard should be read alongside Schedule 1AA of the Freedom Camping Act 2011.(external link)
