ISO’s new International Workshop Agreement (IWA) 16 represents a major step towards reducing emissions from freight transport.
IWA 16:2015 International harmonized method(s) for a coherent quantification of CO2e emissions of freight transport sets the stage for all transport stakeholders to innovate and find more environmentally efficient solutions. IWA 16:
- provides the framework to quantify carbon dioxide e emissions of freight transport
- provides a gap analysis identifying starting points and recommending further specification and alignment on mode-specific and intermodal levels, including transhipment centres and warehouses
- includes a scientific comparison of current standards against industry and stakeholder perspectives. This provides a practical foundation for the development of a global standard for emissions calculation in freight transport chains.
