Standards effective and cost efficient tools for policy makers

Cogs head L

Standards can be powerful market instruments as well as effective and cost efficient tools for policy makers.

A strategic priority for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2014 was to help policy makers understand the benefits of international standards, and to support increased cooperation between standards developers and policy makers.

The result is a set of tools that includes a brochure and leaflet, plus an accompanying website that brings together all of ISO’s resources on this topic (see table below with information and links).

Summary of ISO’s new tools for policy-makers

Using and referencing ISO and IEC standards to support public policy

Contains detailed information on the advantages and benefits of using ISO standards and describes methods of referencing, with national examples.

ISO and IEC International Standards – for policy makers

An executive summary of the material contained in the brochure. Provides a quick overview of key issues for the busy reader.

PPT presentation

Using and referencing ISO and IEC standards to support public policy

A PPT that can be used by ISO members or their national policy makers to present the key issues contained in the brochure.

Policy website

Brings together ISO’s resources for policy makers and provides detailed national examples and international sectoral examples of ISO standards being used to support policy initiatives.

Conformity assessment website

Helps policy makers identify existing conformity assessment tools, consider possible conformity assessment routes and select the solution that best suits their needs.

These tools will help public policy makers, regulators, and standards developers understand how ISO and IEC’s international standards can be used to support policy initiatives. This can include referencing international standards in legislation or regulation, as well as using them to support other kinds of public policy decisions or actions (for example public procurement, incentive systems, awareness campaigns).
