In e-business Standards are indispensable tools

In the context of e-business, Standards are indispensable tools to capture, process, and exchange data, ensure interoperability, support security of data handling and financial transactions, promote good practices, and facilitate customer-supplier relations.  Considering the global reach of the internet, international Standards are particularly relevant.

A recent international conference highlighted the key role of ‘International Standards in enabling e-business’.  Organised by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), among others, the conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The public-private partnerships that advance Standards and technical specifications associated with e-business are motivated by many goals, such as:

  • national competitiveness
  • effectiveness in regulatory controls
  • reducing trade barriers
  • fostering market entry by small and medium-sized enterprises
  • facilitating growth in developing and transition economies.
