Pharmacy services - new Standard to be developed

The Ministry of Health has commissioned Standards New Zealand to manage a project to develop a Pharmacy services Standard.

A scoping workshop was held in 2008 to assess the need to develop a Standard for pharmacy services in New Zealand. The scoping group agreed that a Standard was required, to ensure pharmacy providers supplied good and safe services for consumers.

The Standard will cover both community and hospital-based pharmacy services, and clinical pharmacy services not provided from a pharmacy, and will be based on the New Zealand Standard NZS 8134.1:2008 Health and disability services (Core) Standards. NZS 8134 is a Standard developed for health and disability residential service providers covered by the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001.

The first committee meetings will be held in April and May 2009. The Standard is planned for publication in early 2010.
