Structural steel welding – revised standard

Parts of the standard for Structural steel welding, AS/NZS 1554 have been revised, including Parts 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7. The committee that revised these parts included representatives from the New Zealand Heavy Engineering Research Association and the New Zealand Non-Destructive Testing Association.

Part 1: Welding of steel structures

AS/NZS 1554.1:2014 Structural steel welding – Part 1: Welding of steel structures provides rules for the welding of a wide range of steel constructions. It gives prequalified joint preparations, welding consumables, and welding procedures.

Part 1 applies to statically loaded welds and some welds subject to fatigue.

Supersedes AS/NZS 1554.1:2011.

Part 3: Welding of reinforcing steel

AS/NZS 1554.3:2014 Structural steel welding – Part 3: Welding of reinforcing steel provides a code for the welding of reinforcing steel. It specifies requirements for the welding of reinforcing steel used in concrete structures that comply with AS 3600 or NZS 3101.1.

Part 3 applies specifically to the welding of reinforcing steels complying with AS/NZS 4671.

Supersedes AS/NZS 1554.3:2008.

Part 4: Welding of high strength quenched and tempered steels

AS/NZS 1554.4:2014 Structural steel welding – Part 4: Welding of high strength quenched and tempered steel provides rules for the welding of a wide range of steel constructions, using high strength quenched and tempered steel parent material.

Part 4 provides three categories of welds with three differing levels of weld quality assurance.

Supersedes AS/NZS 1554.4:2010.

Part 5: Welding of steel structures subject to high levels of fatigue loading

AS/NZS 1554.5:2014 Structural steel welding – Part 5: Welding of steel structures subject to high levels of fatigue loading provides rules for the welding of steel structures subject to high levels of fatigue loading.

Part 5 applies specifically to the welding of steelwork in structures complying with AS 3990, AS 4100, or NZS 3404.1.

Supersedes AS/NZS 1554.5:2011.

Part 7: Welding of sheet steel structures

AS/NZS 1554.7:2014 Structural steel welding – Part 7: Welding of sheet steel structures provides rules for the welding of a wide range of light gauge steel constructions complying with AS/NZS 4600. It specifies requirements for the arc welding of steel structures made up of combinations of steel plate, sheet or sections, including pipe, hollow sections, and built up sections (collectively referred to as sheet steels) up to 4.8 mm in thickness.

Part 7 has been specifically prepared for steel structures. It is limited to the welding of steel parent material with a specified minimum yield strength not exceeding 550 MPa.

Supersedes AS/NZS 1554.7:2006.
