Reduce energy consumption – new ISO energy audit standard

Dam Hydro Environment

Many organisations have already integrated an energy management system to reduce energy consumption. Now they can take this a step further with the new ISO standard on energy audits, ISO 50002:2014 Energy audits – Requirements with guidance for use. The standard will help organisations make informed decisions about how they use their energy.

ISO 50002 covers the basic principles and requirements for carrying out energy audits and harmonising common auditing processes. This allows organisations to compare results across similar sites.

Energy audits are a tool to reduce energy consumption and find a long-term solution. Energy audits provide essential information on current energy use and performance and:

  • help identify and prioritise opportunities to improve energy performance, reduce energy waste, and obtain related environmental benefits
  • provide recommendations for improvements in a wide range of areas, including operational controls, maintenance controls, modifications, and capital projects. This helps organisations to improve their energy performance and drive financial benefits.

More to come

ISO 50002 complements ISO 50001 Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use, which focuses on the development of an energy management system.

Other standards to look out for in the future include:

  • ISO 50003 on requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of energy management systems
  • ISO 50004 on guidance for the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of an energy management system
  • ISO 50006 on measuring energy performance using energy baselines (EnB) and energy performance indicators (EnPI)
  • ISO 50015 on the measurement and verification of energy performance in organisations.
