Gas installation two Standards published

Issue 24 – February 2011

Two joint Australia/New Zealand gas installation Standards were published in December 2010. In due course these Standards, AS/NZS 5601.1:2010 and AS/NZS 5601.2:2010, will replace NZS 5261:2003 Gas installation and NZS 5428:2006 LPG installations for non-propulsive purposes in caravans and boats.

AS/NZS 5601.1:2010 Gas installations – General installations

AS/NZS 5601.1:2010 contains the 'essential safety' requirements and means of compliance for the design, installation, and commission of gas installations that are associated with the use or intended use of fuel gases such as natural gas, LP Gas, biogas, or manufactured gas.

Important note: The Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 will continue to cite NZS 5261:2003 as the mandatory 'essential safety' Standard for all gas installations in New Zealand, until the regulations are amended to cite AS/NZS 5601.1:2010.

Part 2 of NZS 5261:2003 remains the recognised means of compliance for most gas installations. This does not preclude the use of other means of compliance Standards, provided the performance requirements in Part 1 of NZS 5261:2003 are met.

AS/NZS 5601.2:2010 Gas installations – LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes

AS/NZS 5601.2:2010 contains the 'essential safety' requirements and means of compliance for the design, installation, and commission of LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes.

Important note: The Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 will continue to cite NZS 5428:2006 as a recognised means of compliance for LPG installations in caravans and boats in New Zealand, until the regulations are amended to cite AS/NZS 5601.2:2010. This does not preclude the use of other means of compliance Standards provided the performance requirements in Part 1 of NZS 5261:2003 are met.
