Bunk beds not meeting standards

Consumers are advised to be careful when choosing bunk beds. A recent screening test carried out by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs showed that none of the bunk beds examined met the voluntary safety standard, AS/NZS 4220:2010 Bunk beds and other elevated beds.

AS/NZS 4220 applies to beds where the upper surface of any mattress base is 700 mm or over above the floor. The standard provides regulatory authorities with safety requirements, and manufacturers with functional, durability, stability, and performance criteria to meet these safety requirements.
