Issue 52 – August 2013

An Approved Code of Practice for Safety and Health in Forest Operations was launched last year to support the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's forestry harm reduction campaign. This campaign aims to reduce the unacceptably high rate of accidents in the forestry sector. It will focus on the tasks of tree felling and breaking out, which consistently account for the greatest number of serious harm accidents notified to the Ministry.

Two revised ISO standards will help to increase forestry worker protection:

  • ISO 5700:2013 Tractors for agriculture and forestry – Roll-over protective structures –Static test method and acceptance conditions

    • specifies a static test method and the acceptance conditions for roll-over protective structures (cab or frame) of wheeled or tracked tractors for agriculture and forestry

    • applies to tractors having at least two axles for wheels mounted with pneumatic tyres, or having tracks instead of wheels, with an unballasted tractor mass of not less than 600 kg and a minimum track width of the rear wheels greater than 1150 mm. It is not applicable to tractors having a mass ratio (maximum permissible mass / reference mass) greater than 1.75.
  • ISO 27850:2013 Tractors for agriculture and forestry – Falling object protective structures – Test procedures and performance requirements

    • covers the test procedures and performance requirements for a falling-object protective structure, in the event such a structure is installed on an agricultural or forestry tractor

    • applies to agricultural and forestry tractors having at least two axles for pneumatic tyred wheels or having tracks instead of wheels. It does not apply to forestry machinery as defined in ISO 6814.
