Amended regulations for caravans

Issue 36 – March 2012

In November 2011, changes came into force to both the gas and electricity regulations that have a bearing on the recreation vehicle (RV) industry (caravans, motorhomes, boats, and so on).

The main changes of note for the RV industry are as follows.

  • The gas installation code is now AS/NZS 5601.2:2010 Gas installations – LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes although the former NZS Standards may continue to be used until December 2012.
  • If any gasfitting is carried out on an imported installation that enables it to be connected to supply (for example, new pigtails) then the whole of the installation must be assessed for compliance with the essential safety requirements of the Standard by the gasfitter.
  • For a new constructed RV to be supplied with electricity a Warrant of Electrical Fitness (WoEF) must now be issued. Previously a Certificate of Compliance could be used for the first 4 years.
  • For an imported RV to get a WoEF, the inspector must first assess the installation for compliance with the essential safety requirements of the Wiring Rules prior to the usual WoEF checks.
