New joint Standard for gas installations mandated

Issue 35 – February 2012

One of the significant changes to the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010, when they were amended in November 2011, was to mandate the new joint Standard for gas installations – AS/NZS 5601. This Standard is in two parts:

  • AS/NZS 5601.1 Gas installations Part 1 General installations, and
  • AS/NZS 5601.2 Gas installations Part 2 LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes

Each part is a stand-alone Standard. Section 3 of each part gives essential requirements and subsequent sections give means of compliance.

Under transitional provisions, installers may continue to use the earlier Standards, NZS 5261 Gas installation and NZS 5428 LPG installations for non-propulsive purposes in caravans and boats, up to 31 December 2012.
