Here at Standards New Zealand, we’re focused on deepening the pool of technical experts on standards development committees. A larger base of willing committee members will help us to ensure we have a sustainable and robust standards development process, and can manage wider work programmes where several projects can be executed at the same time.
As part of a new project to deepen the available pool of experts, we’re developing a long-term strategy and a programme of work to increase:
- the number of technical experts available from nominating organisations
- the depth and range of technical expertise on standards development committees
- the level of participation in standards development projects and committees.
Committees an integral part of developing a New Zealand standard
Standards development committees form an integral part of the process for developing a New Zealand standard. The Standards and Accreditation Act 2015 mandates that when approving members and chairpersons on development committees the Standards Approval Board must ensure a balanced representation of technical experts is achieved for each development committee.
Historically, the available pool of experts in some sectors has been insufficient to ensure adequate and sustained participation in standards development work. This project will help us to have increased flexibility to form balanced and well-represented committees.
