The updated ISO 9004:2018 divulges the secrets and strategies of some of the longest lasting businesses around the world. ISO 9004:2018 Quality management – Quality of an organization – Guidance to achieve sustained success helps other organisations to stay afloat in a rapidly changing world.
ISO 9004:2018 is a revised version of ISO 9004:2009. It builds on previous guidance to help organisations improve their overall performance by releasing the full potential of their quality management system. The standard:
- gives guidelines for enhancing an organisation’s ability to achieve sustained success – this guidance is consistent with the quality management principles in ISO 9000:2015 (in New Zealand AS/NZS ISO 9000:2016)
- provides a self-assessment tool to review the extent to which the organisation has adopted the concepts in this standard
- is applicable to any organisation, regardless of its size, type, and activity
- will help organisations move to the next level beyond ISO 9001 (quality management systems) by addressing topics like the alignment and deployment of strategy, policy, and objectives within the broader context of the organisation’s vision, mission, values, and culture.
According to Charles Corrie, Secretary of the ISO committee that developed ISO 9004:2018, it’s about helping organisations not just survive but achieve sustained success.
‘Often business failure is due to not adapting to changes in the market, competition or new technologies effectively,’ says Mr Corrie. ‘ISO 9004 draws on the strategies, best practice, and experience of some of the most successful businesses around the world to provide guidance for any business, regardless of size or genre. This includes how to anticipate future challenges and how to achieve a higher level of performance along the way.’
