Issue 34 – December 2011
The Ministry of Economic Development's (MED's) Energy Safety and Radio Spectrum Management teams have completed another successful joint prosecution. Digital Tronics Limited received a total of $12,500 in fines and costs in November 2011 for breaching the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 and the Radiocommunications Regulations 2001.
Digital Tronics Limited had not taken any steps to ensure their products met New Zealand requirements and despite warnings and a prior Infringement Notice they continued to trade these products. The products they sold were electrically unsafe and additionally likely to cause interference to radio services.
Online traders are numerous and often 'fly by night', displaying little product knowledge with no regard for the safety of those they sell to. When different MED teams share a common client and a common product, those teams take joint action on regulatory breaches.
