Building Controls Update No. 148 – Port Hills technical guidance released

New residential Guidance on building in toe slump areas of mass movement in the Port Hills (Class II and Class III) is available from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The guidance is in response to issues raised by the release of the GNS Stage 1 report (The Canterbury Earthquakes 2010/11 Port Hills Slope Stability Stage 1) by the Christchurch City Council on 6 November 2013.

The guidance provides high-level geotechnical and structural design principles and criteria, and structural system and house layout recommendations to account for potential land movement. It has been prepared for professional engineers, designers, building control officials, and others implementing the guidance.
