Producing a quality concrete slab-on-ground is easy if some basic rules are followed. CCANZ has updated its Residential Concrete Slab-On-Ground Floors leaflet to reflect the recent Building Code changes listed below, and assist builders to produce a quality slab.
On 1 August 2011, the Department of Building and Housing (DBH) extended from Canterbury to the rest of New Zealand, the requirement for stronger residential foundations. It modified its referencing of NZS 3604:2011 to exclude unreinforced slabs, and specified that:
- All concrete floor slabs on 'good ground' are now required to have Grade 500E reinforcing steel mesh.
- All perimeter foundations are now required to be tied to the concrete slab with reinforcing steel.
