  • DZ 6117 Electrical installations in dairy sheds – available for comment

    Standards New Zealand is inviting feedback by 7 November 2013 from the dairy and electrical sectors on a draft technical report on electrical installations in dairy sheds, DZ 6117. The report is intended to supplement the requirements of AS/NZS 3000:2007 Electrical installations (known as the Australia/New Zealand Wiring Rules) by providing additional guidance on dairy sheds to electrical workers and dairy farm owners and managers.

  • Conditions of contract standard

    Standards New Zealand recently published NZS 3910:2013 Conditions of contract for building and civil engineering construction. As the most widely used standard form of contract in New Zealand, the updated standard will be particularly welcome by the building, construction, engineering, and infrastructure industries.

  • Latest gas installation standards published – AS/NZS 5601.1 & 2:2013

    AS/NZS 5601.1 & 2:2013 were published on 16 September 2013. AS/NZS 5601.1 Gas installations – Part 1 General installations and AS/NZS 5601.2 Gas installations – Part 2: LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes replace the 2010 standards. However, the 2010 standards continue to be referenced in the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 until the Regulations are amended, which is likely to be in 2014. The 2010 standards will not be withdrawn until the Regulations are amended.

  • New ISO technical specification for carbon footprinting – ISO/TS 14067:2013

    ISO/TS 14067:2013 Greenhouse gases – Carbon footprint of products – Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication was published in May 2013. The technical specification helps to quantify and communicate the carbon footprint of products.

  • Fired up – BRANZ Senior Fire Engineer Ed Soja receives Meritorious award

    In August 2013, Ed Soja was one of four technical committee members to receive a Standards New Zealand Meritorious Service Award for his contributions to fire protection standards. As BRANZ's Senior Fire Engineer, Soja has represented BRANZ on New Zealand and joint Australian/New Zealand standards committees for close to 20 years, although his history with standards development goes back even further.

  • Latest British standard on fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings

    2013 BS 5839-1:2013 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic buildings. The full title of the standard is Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises.

  • Revised European standard on the safety of toys migration of certain elements

    BS EN 71-3:2013 is a revised European standard that specifies the requirements and test methods for the migration of certain elements from toy materials and from parts of toys. These elements include aluminium, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium (III), chromium (VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin, and zinc.

  • Computer monitors MEPS and energy rating labels new amendment published

    AS/NZS 5815.2:2013 provides designers, manufacturers, importers, test laboratories, regulators, and users of computer monitors with the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) and energy rating label requirements for computer monitors. The standard includes a new, New Zealand-only Amendment A, published on 19 August 2013.

  • Revised British standard for road safety lighting

    BS 5489-1:2013 Code of practice for the design of road lighting. Lighting of roads and public amenity areas is a revision of the British standard for road lighting design. BS 5489-1 provides additional guidance to the BS EN 13201 series.
