Two revised Standards used by electricians and electrical contractors for the safety inspection and testing of second-hand and repaired equipment have been published. AS/NZS 5761:2011 In-service safety inspection and testing – Second-hand electrical equipment prior to sale provides a process to help sellers of second-hand electrical equipment to provide equipment that is safe to use. AS/NZS 5762 In-service safety inspection and testing – Repaired electrical equipment provides a process to help repairers of electrical equipment to confirm that the repaired equipment is safe to use.

NZS 6115:2006 Electrical installations – Mobile electro-medical connectable installations is amended to reflect changes in the Electricity Safety Regulations 2010. NZS 6115 guides manufacturers, importers, and medical facility users on the construction, checking, and testing of electrical installations in mobile medical facilities.

The 2011/2012 Standards work programme for the energy and safety sector is now underway. The programme includes:
- several revisions and amendments, and some new publications
- several workshops in the next 12 months to help form the future work programme, particularly in the gas sector
- a workshop (as a follow up from the Canterbury earthquakes) to discuss requirements for emergency power supplies to essential services such as hospitals and other critical infrastructure.
We acknowledge the support of Energy Safety and the energy sector in prioritising standardisation activities for the financial year 2011/2012.
Joint Australian/New Zealand Standards for electrical equipment in hazardous areas and in mines are developed by the EL-014 and EL-023 committees. New Zealand is represented on both committees but is interested in attracting additional members to participate on the 28 subcommittees that are responsible for individual Standards or groups of similar Standards.
