A new ISO Standard aims to improve the quality of offerings on the global market that has grown up around non-formal education and training, such as vocational training, life-long learning, and in-company training. Learning services for non-formal education and training – Basic requirements for service providers ISO 29990:2010 will also enhance transparency and allow comparison on a worldwide basis of learning services.

ISO 29990 offers a single alternative backed by international consensus to the huge variety of national service and management Standards which now exists in the field of non-formal learning.

Reliability of systems, equipment and components – Guide to the demonstration of dependability requirements – The dependability case, BS 5760-18:2010, provides a description of the principles of a dependability case and guidance on its content and application in systems engineering.

Dependability is a vital performance characteristic to help businesses to ensure systems are reliable and performing effectively. A dependability case provides a convenient and convincing means of recording and presenting a dependability performance. It is supported by evidence that the necessary dependability performance has been or will be achieved.

Project management principles and guidelines – new Standard

Project management – Principles and guidelines for the management of projects BS 6079-1:2010 will help organisations to achieve a desired outcome on a project, efficiently and effectively. BS 6079-1 covers the management challenges encountered in different project environments and presents possible approaches to these.

BS 6079-1 gives principles and guidance on sponsorship, management, planning, undertaking of projects, and application of project management techniques. The principles provided in this Standard are as relevant to small organisations and for small projects as they are to major organisations with multimillion dollar projects spanning several years.

New requirements – auditing of management systems and auditor competence

The second edition of ISO/IEC 17021 sets new requirements for the auditing of management systems and for auditor competence, to increase the value of management system certification to public and private sector organisations worldwide. The certification bodies that carry out management system certification (independently of ISO), are being given a 2-year period to bring their operations in line with the new edition.

Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems ISO/IEC 17021:2011 is intended to increase trust in certificates issued showing conformity to management system Standards (MSS) such as ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ISO 22000 (food safety management). Certificates to these Standards and other MSS are widely used in global markets to establish confidence between business partners and between organisations and their customers, to qualify suppliers in supply chains, and as a requirement to tender for procurement contracts.

Certification bodies that use the new edition will be able to ensure competent audit teams, with adequate resources, following a consistent process, and reporting audit results in a consistent manner. Observance of the Standard's requirements is intended to ensure that certification bodies operate competently, consistently, and impartially, which will help to build recognition of such bodies and the acceptance of their certifications both nationally and internationally.
