Public consultation open on new revision to SNZ PAS 5210 for high temperature heat pumps

A draft revision of SNZ PAS 5210:2024 High temperature heat pumps is now available for public consultation. This will reflect the rapid pace of innovation in industrial high temperature applications and extend guidance for supply temperatures above 100 °C.

Why a further revision

Commission by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), the guidance update is part of a suite of publicly available specifications provided to help integrate more efficient technology and practices.

High‑temperature heat pump (HTHP) technology is evolving quickly, with new systems and components emerging that can efficiently deliver heat at >100°C - temperatures critical for industrial processes such as drying, steam generation and high‑grade process hot water. While the 2024 PAS broadened the scope from 2021 to cover domestic, commercial and industrial uses, additional detail is now needed to guide decision‑makers and designers working at higher temperature ranges and more complex industrial integrations.

The guidance references and draws upon relevant Australian/New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) and international standards as well as legislation to ensure it reflects latest good practice.

What is changing in this revision

The majority of the 2024 content remains current; the update is focused and technical in nature. The agreed scope includes:

  • Refocusing Section13.4.4 on HTHPs over 100°C, describing the types of technologies in this category and the key systems and components that are commercially available or under development.
  • Relocating and updating refrigerant content for clarity and moving the refrigerant discussion from 13.4.4 to sit with other refrigerant material in Section13.5, and adding any new refrigerant information relevant to >100°C operation.
  • Adding a new Industrial Applications section covering sink temperatures from 100°C to 200°C - including uses such as drying, steam generation, and process hot water (eg dairy or meat processing) with practical design considerations.

Have your say

Public consultation gives you the opportunity to help shape the final document. Draft documents should never be applied in practice as content is subject to change upon final publication.

Review the draft on our Citizen Space consultation hub and provide any feedback you may have. This will then be reviewed by the technical advisory group and further changes incorporated into the final published specification anticipated for publication end of April 2026.
