New Zealand Standards Approval Board

The Standards Approval Board is an independent statutory board set up under the Standards and Accreditation Act 2015. The Board commenced in March 2016 and is responsible for approving the membership of standards development committees and standards that are developed by these committees.

  Vaughan Renner  


Vaughan Renner
 is a director and governance consultant and has more than 20 years of executive and management experience in the automotive sector in New Zealand and Australia. He was a member of the Standards Council from 2005 until February 2016 and has significant experience with standards and standardisation, both as a user and in governing the development of standards. His board experience includes Chair of Business Central Inc., Vice President of Business New Zealand, and Deputy Chair of the Open Polytechnic and the combined Council of the Weltec and Whitireia Polytechnics. He is also a director of several unlisted companies.

   John Boshier  


John Boshier
 is an Accreditation Council member and former Standards Council member and holds governance positions on boards and trusts in engineering, infrastructure, and education, including Electra Ltd. He has over 20 years’ managerial and CEO experience in the energy and engineering sectors in New Zealand and Australia. While being CEO of Engineers Australia he was a Council member of Standards Australia. Mr Boshier is a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand and Trustee of the IPENZ Foundation. His community involvement is through the Rotary Club of Wellington.

 
   Peter Gilbert  


Peter Gilbert
 has over 40 years of experience in the natural gas and LPG industries. He is Executive Director of the LPG Association of New Zealand and Executive Officer of the Gas Association of New Zealand. He is also Chair of the Standards New Zealand Gas Sector Board, Chair of the NZ Gas Community Group, and a member of various Australian/New Zealand standards committees. Mr Gilbert has considerable experience in the regulatory system and the use and development of standards in the energy sector.

 
   Samantha Sharif  


Samantha Sharif
 has significant international experience in the setting and implementation of standards globally and domestically. She was previously CEO of Aviation New Zealand, and CEO and Director of Global Programmes for an international organisation and was based in Holland. Her current governance roles include Chair of Wellington Regional Council Holdings, Director of Motor Trades Association, NZ Institute of Safety Management, Orillion Ltd and Independent Advisor to Coastal Oil Logistics Ltd.

   Peter Stevens  


Peter Stevens
 has been Chief Executive of non-government standards agency GS1 New Zealand since 2004 and has been involved in standards development and global standardisation for close to 20 years. He has worked in senior roles at KPMG Consulting, Standards New Zealand, and Apple Computer NZ. Dr Stevens was also a Senior Lecturer in IT marketing at Victoria University and an Adjunct Professor in information systems and computing at Unitec. He has a PhD in science and post-graduate qualifications in marketing.

   Faye Sumner  


Faye Sumner
 is the Chief Executive Officer for the Medical Technology Association of New Zealand and has more than 40 years of experience in the healthcare sector. She was previously the New Zealand Manager for a multinational medical device company and served as the elected Chairman of the Industry Board. She has been extensively involved in the proposed NZ therapeutic regulations which includes recognition of standards for conformity assessment of medical devices and was a member of the Standards New Zealand Electro-medical Coordination Committee. Ms Sumner is also a Trustee of the University of Auckland, School of Medicine Foundation, a member of the NZ Heart Foundation Board, NZ Artificial Limb Board, and the NZ Universities’ MedTech Centre of Research Excellence Governing Board.

   Richard Merrifield  


Richard Merrifield 
is the owner of a building company in the Nelson region undertaking project management and consulting work on housing projects. He is Deputy Chairman of the Building Practitioners Board and a member of the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. He is a former Director of the Building Research Association New Zealand and former chairman of the Building Research Advisory Council. Mr Merrifield is a member of the Construction Strategy Group and a former chairman of the Certified Builders Association. He was also a member of the Minister of Building and Housing Task Force on Productivity and the Building Act Review Advisory Group.
