Safekids gift buying tips for a safe Christmas and summer

Picking the right gift for the kids, family, and friends can be quite challenging. This holiday and summer season treat them with gifts, which they can enjoy and at the same time, help protect from injuries at home, at play, and on the road.

What to buy

A booster seat. Jazz it up and let their imagination run wild (tell them it's a rocket ship or a fairy chariot!). Eye protectors tested by Consumer NZ

Summarised from news on Consumer NZ website www.consumer.org.nz 28 September 2009

Eye protectors could save your vision. We tested 18 pairs in three different styles and found eight to recommend.

Cheap and effective eye protectors are widely available. All but one of the models we tested offered good protection from a variety of household and workshop hazards.

The choice comes down to price, comfort, and what tasks you want them for.

Hedge trimmer safety – revised international Standard

A revised ISO Standard for Powered hand-held hedge trimmers – Safety ISO 10517:2009 will help to eliminate or reduce the safety risks associated with the use of hedge trimmers. This Standard applies to the design and construction of single operator hand-held hedge trimmers with integrally driven petrol combustion engines.

'This new Standard provides up-to-date valuable guidance to manufacturers and retailers of hedge trimmers worldwide,' says Ken Goodman, Project Editor of ISO 10517:2009. 'Compliance with this Standard will protect their customers and reassure them of the safety of their products.'

ISO 10517:2009 outlines safety requirements and provides guidelines for verifying their correct application, and for considering the significant hazards and dangerous situations that may arise when hedge trimmers are used as intended. The Standard also specifies what type of information manufacturers should provide to ensure safe operation of the product, including warnings and markings.
