Tools and Standards to improve safety in the transport of dangerous goods

Complying with the Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005, is mandatory for all transport operators, and information about emergency procedures for dangerous goods must be accessible at all times.  Standards and tools available to promote safe transport reduce the consequences of accidents involving dangerous goods include:

  • Dangerous goods – Initial emergency response guide, SNZ HB 76:2008 – easy-to-use guidance on how to respond to any emergencies involving dangerous goods.
  • Guide for the packing and transport of dangerous goods in transport units, SNZ HB 77:2008 – practical advice on correct packing and transport of dangerous goods throughout New Zealand. 
  • A segregation wheel for the transport of dangerous goods on land, NZS 5433W – a simple tool to identify which dangerous goods can and cannot be transported together.
