Project, programme, and portfolio management – proposed new field of work at ISO

Issue 19 – August 2010

Standards New Zealand is seeking feedback on a new field of technical activity on 'Project, programme, and portfolio management'. ISO national member bodies ANSI (for the US) and BSI (for the UK) have proposed this new field of work for ISO.

It is proposed that the first project that the newly formed committee would consider would be developing a Standard on portfolio management. A project portfolio is a collection of projects and programmes and other work, not necessarily related, that are grouped together to meet strategic or organisational objectives. Project portfolio management is the centralised management of one or more project portfolios and prioritisation of the individual projects to achieve strategic or organisational objectives. It has been suggested that there is a need to develop a Standard that could serve as a guideline for managing portfolios within an organisation.

For more information, or to submit comments including support for or opposition to the proposal, please email isoadmin@standards.co.nz. Comments received will be used to form a New Zealand position on this proposal. Please provide your comments by Friday, 1 October 2010.

NEW PUBLICATION

NZS 4404:2010 Land development and subdivision infrastructure

This Standard provides local authorities, developers, and their professional advisors with criteria for design and construction of land development and subdivision infrastructure.

The Standard encourages sustainable development and modern design. It is applicable to greenfield and infill development, and brownfield redevelopment projects. Some of the key changes and improvements from NZS 4404:2004 include requirements for earthworks and geotechnical needs, roads, stormwater, wastewater, water supply, landscape, and network utility services. The Standard incorporates up-to-date design principles such as low impact design (LID) solutions to stormwater management, and urban design principles that encourage more sustainable places, spaces, and networks in towns and cities.

Supersedes NZS 4404:2004.
