Pharmacy Standards used for pharmacy audits

Cover of the Pharmacy Standard

The Health and disability services Standards – Pharmacy services Standard NZS 8134.7:2010 will be used by Ministry of Health medicines control auditors for pharmacy audits against legislative and district health board contractual requirements, from the beginning of the new 5-year audit cycle in July 2010.

NZS 8134.7:2010 follows a similar format to the Health and Disability Services Standards used for certification of residential care and hospital care providers. NZS 8134.7:2010 also follows a similar format to the Allied Health Services Sector Standard. Sector-wide requirements such as consumer rights and organisational management are similar across all these Standards aligning services provided by pharmacists with those of other providers of health and disability services.

NZS 8134.7:2010 introduces some new sections to reflect changes in pharmacy practice. The new sections include:

  • criteria for online pharmacies
  • criteria for automated packing and dispensing (robotics)
  • New Zealand specific criteria for aseptic dispensing.

Other aspects of NZS 8134.7:2010 should not require significant changes of pharmacies who meet the current requirements.
