X-ray airport scanners – new Standard in development

The popular press continues to sensationalise the use of X-ray scanners in airports, with mentions of nakedness and photos of people stripped right down to their birthday suits. Photos of buttocks, body piercings, and other very personal items accompany the complaints of invasion of privacy, pornography, child abuse, and so on.

Meanwhile, scientists are quietly working at protecting the health and safety of those people who, whether travellers or scanner operators, have no other option than to be exposed to the X-rays of the new security check systems gradually being introduced in airports.

The truth about body sizes – ISO compiles 'people measurements' from around the world

With changing standards of living, the body dimensions of people have been increasing in many countries over the last few decades. To ensure that clothing, workplaces, transportation, homes, and recreational activities match today's body sizes comfortably and safely, ISO has published a report compiling up-to-date anthropometric data (human body measurements across populations).

The report, Basic human body measurements for technological design – Part 2: Statistical summaries of body measurements from individual ISO populations ISO/TR 7250-2:2010, is the second part of a series on body measurements.
