Revision of Timber-framed buildings Standard NZS 3604 – public comment to start in December 2009

The project to review the foremost Standard in New Zealand for the building and construction industry, Timber-framed buildings, NZS 3604:1999, is well underway. The release of the draft revised Standard for public comment is planned for December 2009. Publication is scheduled for late 2010/early 2011.

Weatherboard fixing

BRANZ is aware of a number of situations where bevel-backed weatherboards are being fixed at the top of the board with a small fixing to hold the board in place before being nailed off with a fixing along the bottom edge. This method of double fixing substantially increases the risk of the boards bowing or splitting because of the double fixing restricting the movement that will occur.

DR 1170.2 Structural design actions Part 2: Wind actions (Revision of AS 1170.2-2002)

To provide wind actions for designing structures subject to wind. This draft provides a detailed procedure for the determination of wind actions on structures, varying from those less sensitive to wind action to those for which dynamic response must be taken into consideration. The objectives of this revision are to remove ambiguities and to incorporate recent research and experiences from recent severe wind events in Australia and New Zealand.
Public comment on this draft closes on 21 December 2009.

Comments: The project is in the draft development stage. The organisational structure for the project is a Leadership Group, P3604 Technical committee, and there are five work groups covering Loadings, Durability, Bracing, Roof framing, and Design appearance and clarity. Several meetings have now been held with a focus on having the revised draft ready for public comment in December 2009.

NZS 4203:1992 General structural design and design loadings for buildings

It is proposed to withdraw Volumes 1 and 2 of this Standard, as it has been superseded by AS/NZS 1170 Structural design actions, which is now referenced by the New Zealand Building Code. Comments on this proposal should be sent to Jono East at jono.east@standards.co.nz by 15 December 2009.
