International oil and gas sector association promotes use of ISO international Standards


The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) is promoting the collaboration of OGP with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), in a new issue of its Standards Bulletin. OGP is encouraging the oil and gas sector to use the suite of ISO international Standards developed for a wide selection of vital oil and gas industry materials, equipment, and offshore structures.

By the end of 2008, the suite included 138 Standards and 19 are planned for 2009.

During an OGP Standards Workshop held in Kuala Lumpur in February 2009, highlighting the use of ISO international Standards for the industry, Datuk Abdullah Karim, Vice-President of Malaysia's PETRONAS company, commented, 'They have helped most of us to realise better returns for our stakeholders and more importantly, they ensure that our operations are safe.'

The oil and gas sector has recognised a market need for a global consensus process to develop uniform and consistent Standards for worldwide application and has been making a major renewed commitment to working within the ISO system to develop a new suite of coherent international Standards.

Most of these Standards are under the responsibility of ISO technical committee ISO/TC 67, whose scope is the standardisation of the materials, equipment, and offshore structures used in the drilling, production, transport by pipelines, and processing of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons within the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.

The vision for the work of OGP's Standards Committee is 'Global Standards used locally worldwide' and is reflected in its annual bulletin which may be downloaded from OGP Standards Bulletin http://www.iso.org/iso/ogp_bulletin_10-2009.pdf. The Bulletin includes an overview of ISO Standards for use in the oil and gas industry.
