Quality management – revised AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Standard available now

AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Quality management systems – Requirements, an adoption of ISO 9001:2008, is now available.  The international Standard ISO 9001:2008, has been adopted unchanged.

The 2008 edition will enable you to clarify the impact the newly revised Standard may have on your organisation's quality management systems.

The new 2008 edition of Quality management systems – Requirements:

  • has been updated to provide clarification on the existing requirements of AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000. It introduces changes to improve consistency with the environmental management system Standard, ISO 14001:2004
  • is the outcome of a rigorous examination confirming its fitness for use as the international benchmark for quality management
  • is the latest edition of the international Standard used by organisations in 175 countries as the framework for their quality management systems.  First published in 1987, ISO 9001 has become the global benchmark for providing assurance about the ability to satisfy quality requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction in supplier/customer relationships.

Clarifications may impact on quality management systems

No new requirements have been introduced into the new edition, and the intent of the requirements remains the same.  However, to gain maximum benefit from the clarifications in the AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 edition, users of the year 2000 edition should consider if these clarifications impact on their current interpretation of that edition.  Modifications may be required to implement and maintain an organisation’s quality management system based on the year 2000 edition.

Certification

Organisations can remain certified to the year 2000 edition; however, certificates to the year 2000 edition will only remain valid until December 2010.

  • Certification to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 is not an ‘upgrade’, and organisations that are certified to the year 2000 edition should be afforded the same status as those which have already received a new certificate to the 2008 edition.
  • Please contact your certification body for details on the certificate transition process.

Although certification of conformity to ISO 9001 is not a requirement of the Standard, it is frequently used in both the public and private sectors to increase confidence in the products and services provided by certified organisations, between partners in business-to-business relations, in the selection of suppliers in supply chains, and in the right to tender for procurement contracts.

Home networking made easy – new Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Standard

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows for seamless connectivity in the home between a vast variety of devices, computers, and operating systems, over virtually any type of connection.

ISO/IEC 29341:2008, Information technology – UPnP device architecture, was developed by the UPnP Forum, an industry initiative designed to provide simple and robust connectivity among consumer electronics, intelligent appliances, and mobile devices, from many different vendors.  The Forum consists of more than 868 vendors.

‘With the adoption of ISO/IEC 29341, UPnP has become the first Standard for IP-based home networking in the industry to become a worldwide recognised international Standard,’ says Dr Alan Messer, Chair of the UPnP Forum’s Steering Committee.

ISO/IEC 29341 has 73 parts that address the various aspects of the technology.  To browse the parts of the Standard, go to www.standards.co.nz, click ISO under the ‘Catalogue’ section, and enter keyword 29341.  You can order the Standard online, or call our customer services team on 0800 782 632.
