Managing flood risk – A process Standard, NZS 9401:2008

Since late 2006, I have been representing local government interests on a committee charged with the development of Standards for flood risk management in New Zealand. This work has resulted in NZS 9401:2008 Managing flood risk – A process Standard. This new Standard is based on the Flood Protocol, developed in 2005 by the Flood Risk Management Governance Group. The managing flood risk Standard presents a best practice approach to managing flood risk. It is designed to be used as the standard process approach, nationwide, when considering flood risk. Intended users include local authorities, central government, communities, engineers, and developers.

Wind turbine generators – revision underway
Standards New Zealand established a committee in July to review the 1998 wind turbines Standard, NZS 6808. Publication of the draft Standard for public comment is planned in early 2009. Release of the Standard, The assessment and measurement of sound from wind turbine generators, is planned by October 2009.
New Zealand Wind Energy Association and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority are joint sponsors of the revision of the Standard.

Concrete segmental and flagstone pavers – amendment 1
NZS 3116 sets out provisions for the non-specific engineering design and construction of pavements using segmental and flagstone pavers. Amendment 1 is in progress, to provide New Zealand variations to paver manufacture and tests for AS/NZS 4455 and AS/NZS 4456.
