Steel structures Standard to be divided into seven parts

Part 1 available for public comment

The Steel structures Standard, NZS 3404, has been used for steel design and construction since the first edition in 1989.  It has already been updated twice, first in 1992, and then in 1997.  Standards New Zealand is now reviewing the Standard again, and NZS 3404 will be divided into seven parts.  The Department of Building and Housing (DBH) sponsored the revision, in combination with voluntary committee support from industry.

The seven interelated parts will ensure the provisions in NZS 3404, and the knowledge that underpins them, can be more easily accessed by the relevant end users.  The parts will cover: materials, fabrication, and construction; structural analysis; general design of members and connections; design of composite members; design for fire; design for fatigue; and design for earthquakes.

Steel structures seminars – Summer series 2009

Preparations for a full day seminar for structural engineers are well underway. Steel Construction New Zealand Inc. (SCNZ) will focus on the draft new Steel structures Standard, NZS 3404.1, including guest presenters and case studies by local fabricators.

NZS 3404 is being re-organised into seven parts to improve usability and allow progressive development and release.  Part 1, Materials, fabrication, and construction, is the first to be reviewed. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to apply the many useful features in this new Standard, based on the draft.  Seminar attendees will be able to pre-order copies of the new Standard at a discounted rate, through SCNZ.

Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials – new and revised parts

We have published several new and revised parts of the Standard for Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials:

  • AS/NZS ISO 3834.1:2008 provides a general outline of AS/NZS ISO 3834 and criteria to be taken into account for the selection of the appropriate level of quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials, among the three levels specified in AS/NZS ISO 3834 Parts 2, 3, and 4.  It applies to manufacturing, both in workshops and at field installation sites. Identical to ISO 3834-1, Ed. 2.0 (2005).  Supersedes AS/NZS ISO 3834.1:1999.
  • AS/NZS ISO 3834.2:2008 defines comprehensive quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials both in workshops and at field installation sites. Identical to ISO 3834-2, Ed. 2.0 (2005).  Supersedes AS/NZS ISO 3834.2:1999.
